Liposuction
- Liposuction (Body Contouring) -
Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove localized collections of excess fat. It is most often performed in areas which have been resistant to diet, exercise and weight loss. It is best thought of as a method of “body contouring” or “body sculpting” and is not a substitute for weight loss in cases of generalized obesity.
Liposuction can be performed on most areas of the body safely and effectively. Liposuction is performed by introducing a blunt, hollow tube, called a cannula, through a small (quarter-inch), inconspicuous incision. The cannula is connected to a suction machine which removes the fat. The tumescent technique is used. This is performed by injecting a solution into each surgical site prior to performing the liposuction. The solution decreases swelling, bruising, and postoperative pain.
New additional modalities of treatment, including ultrasonic assisted liposuction, are constantly being evaluated. Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia.
You should expect to be able to return to work during the first week after the liposuction procedure and resume all normal activities including exercise after three to four weeks.
